The Aleppo Vase takes Aji's composite process as far from traditional carving as he has pushed it. The walls run thin and the overhangs long and sharp, a form no carver could pull from a block, though the surface passes for stone. Aji likes the contradiction at the center of it, an aggressive, digitally born form made to hold something delicate and natural.

Joey Aji is a Brooklyn-based designer working between sculpture and furniture. His pieces start as digital models built from architectural fragments, domes, columns, corbels, and carved ornament, then get 3D printed and hand-finished in marble dust and mineral resins until the surface passes for stone. Syrian American and raised around Orthodox and Mediterranean architecture, he treats those forms as a language he can reshape by hand.
