A return to abstraction after Li Chang's long stretch of carefully observing light. A burning fist obstructs a field that hovers between a landscape and a face, with a foreboding rabbit-like form.

Austin Li Chang is an oil painter of nebulous, emotional portraits and images of the everyday. Working from photographs, he balances close observation with memory, letting each image distort toward sensation. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, and was most recently featured in New American Paintings' NOVA 1 publication.
