A portrait of the artist's partner, Sungchul, in Hakone, Japan, his form drowned by the surrounding shadows and relieved by the forest behind him.

Austin Li Chang is an oil painter of nebulous, emotional portraits and images of the everyday. Working from photographs, he balances close observation with memory, letting each image distort toward sensation. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, and was most recently featured in New American Paintings' NOVA 1 publication.
