The Tassel Table stands on turned maple legs finished in a dimensional cherry-red lacquer, a high gloss that deepens the color while letting the grain and joinery show through. The turned feet take the shape of tassels, a historical decorative motif reworked into something contemporary. The design began with a wrought iron handrail Stechschulte saw in a palazzo in Faenza, Italy, where a marble staircase ended in an iron tassel in place of the usual finial. The lacquer can be made in a range of colors.

Anna Stechschulte for AFS.DSGN is a furniture designer and maker in Chicago. She works primarily in hardwood maple, shaped through turning and traditional joinery, and often begins with the materials themselves, collecting textiles and hides before a design takes form. Her influences range from Scandinavian furniture and alpine woodcraft to Italian design history, and her pieces are conceived as modern heirlooms, made to feel both unusual and familiar at once.
