The Bubble Chair pairs a rounded, hand-turned maple frame with a fully upholstered seat, its curved sculptural silhouette giving the chair its name. It marked a turning point for Stechschulte, the first piece where she moved from the natural maple she had always worked in into finish and color, and that openness is built into the design. The frame can be finished in a natural water-based surface that shows the grain or a high-gloss lacquer in a saturated color, and the seat upholstered in anything from moiré silk to wool.
Anna Stechschulte for AFS.DSGN is a furniture designer and maker in Chicago. She works primarily in hardwood maple, shaped through turning and traditional joinery, and often begins with the materials themselves, collecting textiles and hides before a design takes form. Her influences range from Scandinavian furniture and alpine woodcraft to Italian design history, and her pieces are conceived as modern heirlooms, made to feel both unusual and familiar at once.
