White blooms are scratched through a layer of burnt umber to the yellow beneath. Sgraffito is an old decorative technique, used on ceramics and plaster long before canvas. This body of work grew from Silverstein's fascination with folk art and found objects, and from the idea of a painting as an object rather than an image. Cotton duck canvas is stretched over pine and cradled in a wooden frame he paints by hand, built as an extension of the work rather than a decoration around it.

David Silverstein is a multidisciplinary artist based in Connecticut. His work explores a personal relationship with nature, vision, memory, and cross-cultural symbolism through handmade objects and paintings.
