ALL THINGS STONE WITH STUDIO H

Today, we explore Kelly Hinchman's evolution from interior designer to product designer and delve into all things stone. Hinchman founded the California-based Studio H Design Group in 2013 and specializes in crafting impactful interiors that redefine urban-coastal living. Their tagline is "bespoke, sophisticated, with just the right amount of edge." Recently, Hinchman made a natural progression to product design. After years of hunting in flea markets for the perfect final touches, Kelly created the Studio H collection to fulfill the need to find hand-crafted and unique decor for her clients. Read on as we chat with Hinchman about all things stone.

1. Tell us a little bit about your background and how you came to the world of art and design?

It sounds slightly cliché, but I was  one of those kids who always was rearranging their room, drawn to art, history of art and objects, and design was just in my heart. Growing up my parents collected Majolica, so many weekends and vacations were spent exploring antique stores as a family and that really laid the foundation for my love of unique, purposeful, and handmade objects.

2. How did you make the leap from interior design to product design?

The transition from interior design to product design was a natural evolution for me. Always on the hunt for handcrafted and unique furnishings for my clients, I noticed a niche opportunity. We do so much custom work on the interior design side, form and function always sets the tone. All this combined led to the creation of Studio H Collection.

3. I have always been particularly drawn to the intersection of art and functionality for the home. You bridge that gap so beautifully with your new line of products. What is the inspiration behind the line?

It really all stems from my passion for curating elevated interiors and innovative furnishings. I sought to create a line that seamlessly blends art and functionality. All the pieces are beautiful on their own, but also multipurpose.

4. How do you see your products being styled? Is there an ideal setting?

The ideal setting is one that appreciates the fusion of art and functionality, where each piece can stand out as a unique and purposeful addition to the space. The collection was designed to complement a range of settings, and seamlessly blend with any aesthetic.

5. What are some of the biggest challenges you faced in the evolution of your design career?

Adapting to changing trends and navigating the balance between creativity and functionality are some significant challenges we are always learning from. I always try to be patient with the process as well, sometimes an idea will come to me, but if the functionality isn’t there, or if the prototype isn’t right, I have to trust the process.

6. Tell us a little bit about your personal style? Do you have any specific philosophies that you look to?

I like to find pieces that I am drawn to and that express my individuality. I want to surround myself with beautiful and functional items, if it feels right, it’s usually right. I also love to play up the season, so I am constantly restyling parts of our home. Greenery makes any space feel more elevated, flowers are a must.
