National Decorating Month: Jeremiah Brent

Photography by Ethan Herrington
Â
April is National Decorating Month, and we're spending it with a weekly interview series featuring designers we admire. We're talking to them about what decorating actually means to them, what they're sourcing, and what advice has stuck with them over the years. For us, decorating is where so much of what we do comes together. We spend our days thinking about the objects, the art, the ceramics, but it's designers who bring those pieces into real rooms and real lives.
Last week we sat down with Cola Studios. This week: Jeremiah Brent.

Jeremiah Brent is an interior designer, television host, and founder of Jeremiah Brent Design, with offices in Los Angeles and New York. He lives in New York with his husband, Nate Berkus, and their two children. His work has landed him on Architectural Digest's AD100 and Elle Decor's A-List multiple times, and he most recently joined Queer Eye as the interior design expert in season nine. His 2024 book, The Space That Keeps You, explores what gives spaces meaning, not just what makes them beautiful.
We've had the pleasure of working with Jeremiah over the years, and he recently completed a renovation of Lauren's family lakehouse in the Finger Lakes, featured in Architectural Digest earlier this year. His approach to that project, and to all his work, centers on making spaces feel like the people who live in them.

What's the last piece you sourced that you're excited about?
I was recently at the Paris Flea Market, shopping for a client, when I looked over and found the most insane wooden sculpture: a 2x3 ft bird, very Fernando Botero in its proportions. We dropped everything and had it shipped to our home in Portugal.
Â
Is there a project you've finished recently that feels particularly special to you?
Speaking of... we just photographed our family's farm in Portugal. We've become known for selling a property as soon as we settle in. But this one, this is the one that will be in our family for generations to come. This is the first home we've ever bought that's for someone else. This property is for them, by us.

Â
What's a historic interior designer or design movement you find yourself returning to?
Czech Cubism and the French 30's.
Â
How do you know when a room is done?
It's just a feeling. I'm not sure how to describe it. When the team feels like a space is complete, I always spend a few more minutes alone within it to create what I call the last layer. Small shifts, like scents and chair angles. Or a finishing floral. Movements that most wouldn't notice. But it makes all the difference to me.
Â
Do you have a go-to styling trick?
Use symmetry sparingly. Balance can come in more creative ways than you think.
