1. KNOW YOUR WHY
Whenever I entertain I start by reflecting on my “why.” Why am I bringing people together and what is the purpose behind it all. This reflective moment serves as the compass that guides my efforts in setting the tone for the gathering. Is it an early afternoon party meant to celebrate the end of summer filled with kids? A dinner party bringing together creatives I admire? By understanding my "why," I ensure that every detail, from the ambiance to the menu and the activities, aligns harmoniously with the intended experience, making each gathering a memorable and meaningful occasion for all involved.

2. PLAN AHEADÂ
Planning is a must for me, even for a small dinner party. Setting the table a night or a few days in advance, crafting the menu, choosing the perfect drinks, and envisioning how I want the event to unfold is more than just a habit; it's a significant stress reducer for me. The confidence that everything is in place lets me be fully present and relish the evening without the burden of last-minute scrambling.
3. SET AN INTENTION
My intentions don’t revolve around the event, but focus on how I want to show up and engage with others. Whether striving to be a more attentive listener, fostering opportunities to learn something new, or forging deeper connections with those around me, these intentions serve as my compass for the night. This newfound ritual transforms gatherings into more than just social occasions; they become opportunities for meaningful connections.
4. DRESS WITH PURPOSE
Planning my outfit ahead is a non-negotiable part of my event preparation, and knowing my "why" for the gathering is incredibly helpful. Whether it's a laid-back backyard BBQ or an intimate dinner with creatives, I want to strike the perfect balance between comfort and style. My outfit choice isn't just about looking good; it's about expressing something that aligns with the event's purpose. It's a way to visually communicate my enthusiasm for the occasion and connect with the vibe of the gathering.

5. DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF
I know it is so cliche, but this one is so important for my own enjoyment of an event. Hosting is about embracing the bigger picture. It’s not about the perfection of the flowers. or whether Mother Nature decides to grace us with a downpour. What truly matters is crafting a meaningful opportunity for people to come together and connect. While I delight in adorning a beautiful table and creating an inviting atmosphere, I've learned that it's not the aesthetics that ultimately lead to genuine connections. It's the shared laughter, the heartfelt conversations, and the joy of being in one another's company that make an event truly special. So, I've come to appreciate that the imperfections and unexpected moments often become the most cherished memories.
6. CREATE A MEMORABLE TABLE
This tip might not be for everyone, but for me, it's one of the most fun aspects of preparing for a dinner party. I revel in handpicking tabletop objects that will ignite conversations and add a unique touch to the gathering. My penchant for vintage or artist-made pieces lends an air of individuality to the setting, making it a true reflection of my personal style. Even when hosting larger parties that necessitate more standard dishware, I find creative ways to incorporate these distinctive elements into the overall decor, ensuring that each dinner experience carries a touch of my passion for aesthetics and storytelling.

7. BE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT LIGHTING
Lighting is a crucial element of my dinner party preparations, and I put a lot of thought into it. For me, candlelight is the ultimate choice, as it casts a warm and inviting ambiance that aligns perfectly with the vibe I aim to create. I prefer to keep overhead lights dimmed, allowing the room to bask in a soft, intimate glow. This deliberate lighting setup not only adds an air of romance but also fosters a sense of closeness and authenticity among guests.

8. START WITH SMALL BITESÂ
Regardless of the shape my menu takes, be it a casual family-style feast or an elegant four-course meal, I always like to start with small shared bites. This practice sets the perfect tone for the dining experience, allowing my guests to sample various enticing flavors. I find that this method often sparks lively conversations as guests discuss their favorite flavors, ingredients, and their personal culinary experiences. It transforms the dining table into a platform for storytelling, connecting people through their shared love for food.
9. SERVE AN INTERESTING NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINK
As I've grown older, I've witnessed more friends embrace alcohol-free lifestyles for various reasons, including health, well-being, or simply personal preference. Having also chosen to go alcohol-free myself, I understand the importance of providing an appealing non-alcoholic option. This simple gesture not only accommodates the diverse tastes of my guests but also adds a thoughtful touch to every gathering, ensuring that everyone feels welcomed and valued, regardless of their drink choices. It's a small change that makes a big difference in fostering inclusivity and ensuring that every guest can raise a glass to good times without compromise.

10. FIND A BIT OF QUIET BEFORE THE EVENT BEGINSÂ
Taking a little breather before the event kicks off is my go-to move for staying calm and ensuring I can genuinely connect with everyone. For me, this involves meditation, but it could be as simple as a couple of deep breaths or just jamming to a favorite song. This practice not only sets a peaceful tone for the upcoming gathering but also ensures you're in the best mindset to engage with your guests and foster meaningful connections.
