Gordon Moore
Gordon Moore is a designer and maker from Brooklyn whose multidisciplinary approach is highly influenced by the natural world. Having spent his childhood on Martha's Vineyard, Moore expresses profound ties to coastal environments through the experiences of fishing, hunting, sailing, and surfing; these experiences continue to inform his material-based collections of objects, lighting, and furniture. Born into a family of artists, his creative journey began early with drawing and painting before expanding to include a range of mediums and techniques.
With training from Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, Moore now juxtaposes an academic approach within his studio practice with a commitment to craftsmanship and sustainable design. Although ceramics form the basis of Moore's work, he works fluently across materials, producing pieces like the Rockland Lamp, which serves as a canvas for showcasing small collected objects, or the Katama Low Table, which unites fine woodwork with textural ceramic elements. His work embodies a quiet significance that informs everyday interactions, citing inspiration from artists such as Jean Singer Sargent, Andrew Wyeth, and Isamu Noguchi.
For Moore, the arts and crafts of handcrafted objects go far beyond all their physical properties; they offer emotional connections espousing a sort of immersed bond to people, places, and moments in time. Inspired by slate grays from rock faces, sunrise orange fields, and the many textures surrounding us in nature, his work prefers to be timeless forms over trends-the kind which echo natural surfaces. Everything he creates is connected to something he loves deeply, infusing each piece with this sentiment and inviting others to experience the same connection.
