Yellow Hair No. 1 is acrylic paint on unprimed canvas by painter and sculptor Susan Maddux. It was inspired by a painting by Richard Diebenkorn. Born in Hawaii, Maddux takes inspiration from her native land, a watery place full of ghosts and dreams where color is vibrant and bleeds into everything. The paintings utilize a technique Maddux has honed over the years that involves watering down acrylic paints to use them like watercolors. Although the process often distorts the image, Maddux finds freedom in the unexpected results of her technique. She claims, "My process is about water. I am about water. I am most comfortable in the water and even better under the surface."
"I continue to have absolute faith in painting's near muteness. Its only convincing utterance arises from its simple, or complex—but unadorned—existence."
Richard Diebenkorn, 1969
