Ofuro is acrylic paint on unprimed canvas by painter and sculptor Susan Maddux. Based on a photograph from Japan circa 1930, the image is a timeless gesture that speaks to the movement of art and ideas from Europe to Asia and back again, celebrating everyday beauty. Born in Hawaii, Maddux takes inspiration from her native land, a watery place full of ghosts and dreams where color is vibrant and bleeds into everything. The paintings utilize a technique Maddux has honed over the years that involves watering down acrylic paints to use them like watercolors. Although the process often distorts the image, Maddux finds freedom in the unexpected results of her technique. She claims, "My process is about water. I am about water. I am most comfortable in the water and even better under the surface."
"A saint or angel doesn't have to be a priest, a high-achieving person, or anyone particularly special. Anyone who is decent and civilized and a good person, we should be celebrating."
