Mirisola wanted to play on seaside kitsch, shells layered up into a shade, but hers grew into an organic shape and got dripped in resin until the whole thing looked hauled out of the ocean. Turn it on and the glow comes through the shells and shows their insides. She kept the base plain on purpose, to balance the top and keep it a lamp you'd put on any table. The collection came out of two things she kept looking at, ancient grottos decorated with shells and Dutch still lifes overflowing with flowers and butterflies.

Michele Mirisola is a Brooklyn painter and sculptor and the artist behind Chell Fish. She takes Baroque and Rococo craft and remakes it in epoxy clay and resin, the kind of objects you'd see in a painting of a grand interior, except you can pick them up and use them. An artist residency in Lesa, Italy, keeps pulling her back to the region's frescoes, statues, and wrought iron fences.
